Connect to ETH servers (NAS)

ETH Server Mac (NAS)

Please note: you can only access our servers from within the ETH network. From home or from outside ETH, you must first connect with VPN.

To connect to the ETH servers under macOS, please follow these instructions:

1. In the Finder, click «Go» [1] and then «Connect to Server...» [2]. Enter «smb://nas22.ethz.ch» [3] as the address. Then click «Connect» [4].
   If the «Connect to Server» window [3] does not appear, restart your computer and/or check your internet connection (within ETH use the SSID «eduroam», from outside ETH enable VPN).

   

2. Click «Connect».

   

3. In the Name field, enter «d\username» (username is your ETH username/short name) [1] and your ETH password (the same as for mail, printer, etc.) [2]. Then click «Connect» [3].

   

4. Select the desired server share [1] (example: Deplazes Student) and click «OK» [2]. You should now be connected to the server.
   Note: you must be authorised for the selected server. If it doesn't work, please contact the IT representative of the chair in question.

ETH Server Quick Connect Mac (NAS)

To access the corresponding server shares directly in the «Open» and «Save as» dialogs, you can place them in the Finder's Favourites sidebar, as described below.

1. First, the connected servers and shares must be made visible on the macOS desktop. Open the Finder settings (desktop) and activate the option «Connected servers».

   

2. Connect the desired server shares as usual. They now appear on the desktop, and you can drag and drop them into the Finder's Favourites list.

   

3. The server shares are now conveniently and quickly available in the «Open» and «Save» dialogs.

Please note: you can only access the servers from within the ETH networks. Outside the ETH network, you have to start VPN first.

Connect to a network share

1. Open «File Explorer» next to the Start button or use the shortcut Windows key + E.

   

2. Enter the following server address into the address bar: \\nas22.ethz.ch

   

3. Log in with your ETH username (with a «d\» in front of the username) and your password.

   

4. After a successful login, you see all the shares, regardless of whether you have access to them or not.

   

Map a network share permanently

1. If you wish to connect a share permanently, right-click the share and choose «Map network drive...».

   

2. Choose the drive letter you want to assign to the server share.

   

Possible problems

• My login is not accepted: connect with «d\username». How to reset your password.
• I don't have access to a specific network drive: then you don't have the required permissions. Please tell your assistant; they will write us an e-mail at servicedesk@arch.ethz.ch.
• I can't connect to the server: does the «eduroam» Wi-Fi connection work? How to connect wirelessly to the ETH network.
• Do you have a firewall installed? If yes, please deactivate it and try to connect again. We recommend that everybody uses the free and already installed Windows Firewall.

2. Open the «Files» app (preinstalled from iOS 13.x).

   

3. Tap «...» [1] and choose «Connect to Server» [2].

   

4. Enter the server name «smb://nas22.ethz.ch» [1] and tap «Connect» [2].

   

5. Choose «Registered User» [1]. Then enter «d\username» (your ETH username/short name) [2] and your ETH password [3]. Then tap «Next» [4].

   

6. You will now see the available server shares. Important: you only have access to the shares for which you have been authorised!

   

Note: If connecting to smb://nas22.ethz.ch does not work, please enter the exact path to the desired server share, for example: smb://nas22.ethz.ch/arch_iea_deplazes_student
