Set up printers for staff (HP, ETH Print)

How staff set up the HP printers of the ETH Print Service: on macOS with the HP drivers and the ETH Printers tool, on Windows via the print servers pia01 and pia02.

These instructions are for staff. Students install the Card-Stud HP package on their Mac: Set up printers for students (Mac, Card Stud HP).

Please follow these instructions to access all printers at ETH under macOS.

  1. Download the printer drivers

The following drivers are required for the HP printers:

After downloading, install the two driver packages by double-clicking the .pkg file.

  1. Install the printer tool

Download the printer tool:

After you have downloaded the tool, run it in your Downloads folder by double-clicking it.

When this window opens, the setup has started. Click "Continue".

Select "Macintosh HD" and click "Continue".

Then click "Install".

The printer tool is now installed.

  1. Add a printer

You can find the ETH Printers tool under Macintosh → Applications → Utilities → ETH Printers, or you can search for "ETH Printers".

When you start the tool, you are asked to connect to the server. Click "Connect".

Log in with d\ETH-username and your ETH standard password (the same as for mail, server, etc.). Backslash on the CH keyboard: Shift + Alt + 7.

Then you can add the desired printer.

The printers are sorted by location and building. This means you can install a specific printer for the desired room or building and then print directly on this device.

Example: HP ColorLaserjet HIL C 75

For the card printer, which lets you release the print job on any printer with your ETH card, install the "card-hp" with "Install Printer".

  1. Turn off tracking

For printing to work at ETH, you must disable the default setting "Restrict IP address tracking":

Additional note

Printing in colour

After installation, your printer is configured to print in black and white by default. You can change this in the print dialog under "Color" [1] by setting the option "Print in grayscale" to "Off" [2]. When you print now [3], your print job will be printed in colour once.

If you always want to print in colour, save this setting as a preset by choosing "Save current settings as default..." [4].
