Microsoft 365 (Cloud Subscription)

How to set up your ETH Microsoft 365 subscription and install the Office applications on macOS and Windows.

Summary:

  • Order the cloud subscription in the ETH IT Shop
  • Download and install Microsoft 365 and Office
  • Log in and activate with username@ethz.ch, ETH password and OTP

1. Order the cloud subscription

  1. Visit the ETH Zurich IT Shop at https://itshop.ethz.ch and click on the «Login» button [1]. Log in with your ETH username [2] and your ETH password (the same as for mail, server, etc.) [3]. Then click on the «Sign in» button [4].

  2. Select «Service Catalog» [1] and then click on «Cloud Subscription» [2]. Then select «Personal Cloud Subscription» [3] → «Request Microsoft Cloud Subscription» [4].

  3. Click on «Yes» [1] and then select «MS VirtualOffice» [2]. Then click on «Submit Request» [3].

  4. Now wait for the confirmation e-mail. This can take up to 20 minutes. Your Microsoft Cloud licence is then activated.

2. Download and install Microsoft 365 and Office

  1. Now visit the website «office.com» [1]. Then click on «Log in» [2].

  2. Log in with your ETH username followed by @ethz.ch [1]. Then click on «Next» [2].

  3. Field [1] should already be filled in with username@ethz.ch. Enter your ETH password (the same as for mail, server, etc.) in field [2]. Then click on «Log in» [3].

  4. This is followed by OTP authentication with your One Time Password [1]. Then click on «Send» [2].

  5. In the following dialog window, you can select «Do not show this message again» [1] and then click on «Yes» [2].

  6. Select «Apps» [1] and then «All Apps» [2].

  7. Then click on «Install Apps» and «Microsoft 365 Apps».

  8. When you click on «Install Office» [1], the current version of Office is downloaded and is then ready for installation.

  9. Mac users will find the installer in the «Downloads» folder and can start the installation by double-clicking on it [1]. Then start the installation with «Continue» [2]. In the following windows, click on «Continue» (License), «Accept», «Continue» (Install for all users of this computer) and then «Install».

Windows users will find the installer in the «Downloads» folder and start the installation by double-clicking on the installer [1]. Once the installation is complete, you will receive the confirmation «Everything ready!» and can then close the window [2].

  1. Mac users will now find the current Office 365 applications in the «Applications» folder [1].

Windows users will find the Office 365 applications in the «Programs» folder [1].

3. Log in and activate with username@ethz.ch, ETH password and OTP

  1. Now start a Microsoft program such as «Microsoft Word». This window will then appear. Click on «Sign in or create an account» [1].

  2. Now log in as usual with your ETH username followed by @ethz.ch [1]. Then click on «Next» [2].

  3. Field [1] should already be filled in with username@ethz.ch. Enter your ETH password (the same as for mail, server, etc.) in field [2]. Then click on «Log in» [3].

  4. This is followed again by OTP authentication with your One Time Password [1]. Then click on «Send» [2].

  5. The licences are now searched for automatically [1]. Then click on «Start using Word» [2].

  6. Microsoft Word and all other Microsoft Office applications are now licensed and fully available to you.

Exception: Microsoft Teams Classic. Here the login procedure with user authentication and OTP is necessary again (steps 17 and 18).
