Remote computers
Use free D-ARCH computers remotely: terms of use, current availability and how to connect via Remote Desktop.
Terms of Use – Fair Use Principle
- Distance learning and courses always have priority. On the booked days (see below), only people registered for the course are allowed to log in on the computers.
- Only one login per person. Being logged in on more than one computer at the same time is not permitted.
- Please do not run long calculations (rendering) on these computers. Use the appropriate cloud services instead.
- Do not block a computer for more than 12 hours.
- Only connect to computers that are free (see below).
- Please be aware that we might restart the computers overnight for maintenance.
Note
Other people can log you out at any time if you do not decline the login request within 30 seconds. None of your open documents will be saved!
Remote Computers
These computers can be used at any time (no courses or training sessions here).

Remote Desktop
-
Your device has to be connected to the internet. If you are connecting from outside ETH, the Cisco Secure Client (VPN) has to be installed: see Set up VPN.
-
Connect to the VPN if you are connecting from outside ETH.
-
Start the app "Remote Desktop Connection", which is preinstalled on Windows. Mac: https://apps.apple.com/ch/app/microsoft-remote-desktop-10/id1295203466?mt=12
-
Before you connect, please read the terms of use above.
-
Enter the hostname of the desired computer (e.g. ARCH-E65-W-01) and click "Connect". If anything goes wrong while connecting, you may have to enter the hostname like this: "ARCH-E65-W-01.ethz.ch". If you still receive an error after that, the computer may be offline or switched off. Try connecting to a different computer.
-
Log in with your ETH login. If you are connecting to a computer for the first time, you may see a certificate error asking whether you still want to connect. In this case, just click "Yes".
-
When you have finished working on the computer, please do not just close the connection. On the desktop you will find an icon called "Logoff". Double-click this icon: you will be logged out and the connection will be closed.
